Chem (a truncation of "chemical") is post-apocalyptic slang for "drug". A chem is any chemical, medicinal or otherwise, used to effect changes in a person's behavior or biological systems.Various chems exist in the wasteland, some more beneficial than others. Abusing chems results in addiction. Addiction to a chem will cause withdrawal symptoms when the chem wears off unless you continue to take the drug, or seek a cure.
Different chems do different things, some raise your attack while others raise your defense. Some other chems may make you smarter, or stupider. But all in all, chems all have a good benefit but also come with downsides, like a high addiction rate.
